Dee Dee which was short for Double Dapple is the sweetest double dapple girl who was rescued back in November.  Little DeeDee unfortunately had the double dapple vision issues and had a little bit of a problem seeing at times, but other than that, she was fine.  Due to the possible special needs of her future, we weren't sure we were going to be able to find her a forever home, which is fine, because she could have stayed here with us as a sanctuary dog.  However, we were able to find a wonderful, caring and loving adopter who was willing to take DeeDee in vision issues and all.  We know that DeeDee will get unconditional love!  We await pictures!

Updated on October 22, 2009

Hi Chris,

I just wanted to update you on how Rex (formerly Maxamillion) has adjusted to our family.  Rex is the sweetest dachshund I have ever met.  And I know a lot of doxies!  Eva spent the first couple of weeks trying to act like she didn't like him, but we all know better.

Rex takes us all on walks every evening.  He has to be the first to get in and out the door and around the block.  The rest of us all follow as he wags his tail nonstop.  He loves to cuddle in the big bed.  He finally adjusted to the food change and now does the "hoppy dance" every time we get out his dish.  We call him Hopper and Eva Grrrr because she loves to grunt at him when he runs past her.

They love to play chase with Eva in pursuit.  We couldn't have asked for a more well mannered, sweet tempered dog.

They are a great match.  Thank you.  I've attached a few pictures of the "masters" of the house for your website.

Pam, Mike and Kelsey from Fresno.

Ruby

Adopted May 2, 2009

Hi Chris!

It was so fun to see you! I hope that you got some nice adopters today. Ruby has been nothing but wonderful since she came home. It's so perfect how it all worked out. Sometimes the right doggie just finds you! She has been so mellow and sweet. It's like we've always had her, she's no trouble at all. Ruby and Fonzie (our black male who resembles your hefty dog "Bo") are good friends. The two of them look like book-ends! They have the same chubby body and calm personalities.

Ruby's smart too! She laid herself right on my dad's lap. He tried not to like her, but he's been petting her tonight while we watched a movie. She's also excellent about not begging for food. We spilled some popcorn on the couch and she didn't even go for it. What nice manners! I'm sure this will work out just fine! We'll email you with more updates this week.

Ruby came with us to the car wash and the pet store (for a collar and name tag). She was awesome and didn't seem scared at all. She's super. All the dogs are getting along just fine. Cooper is like a bulldozer and does annoy her and Peanut, but they put him in his rightful place! The girls love to growl at Cooper, and he is deserving of it. Hopefully Cooper's neutering next week will calm him a bit. He's crazy!

Chipper and Sydney

Went home February 2009

Sydney and Chipper were two dogs from the Texas area, that came to us approximately 10 months ago.  We came to find out that the dogs were turned into rescue for "revenge".  When the owner found the dogs in California he was so upset, because monetarily, he was not able to get them back to Texas and unfortunately, we did not have any transports to his area to send them back to him. Thankfully, he kept in contact with us, and some friends were kind enough to drop by on their way back from visiting someone in Northern California and transport these guys to their original owner!  We are so happy it worked out this way, that these guys get to go home!  We await pictures and updates on them because we will miss Sydney's tap dancing during dinner time and Chipper the "Lord of the Laundry Room", because he loved to sleep and hang around in the laundry room and his nightly walks with his temporary brothers and sisters!  We will miss you guys but are so happy that it worked out!

We were so happy when Chipper from Fresno found his new family in October of 2008, we are happy to be recieving updates from them about his progress and his happy life!

Christmas 2008

Hi Chris,
Here's an update on Louis. We adore him! He is so gentle & sweet. He is totally my baby. When I leave he has been known to howl and cry for an hour straight! Lucy and Louis have become best friends. They love to play and chase each other in the yard. They act just like little kids. They take turns on who gets to chase and be chased! We love him and are so grateful to have him.
Take care,  Lisa Maggio

November 2008

Hi Chris,
WOW! Louis is the best little guy. He is so loving and has fit perfectly in with our family. He has become a mama's boy! I can't believe how well behaved he is. Lucy needs to take lessons!
I have had a lot of comments (all good) about the adoption. My Mom and Dad are really impressed with Louis and with all of the hard work you put into Dachshund Haven. They haven't had a dog in a few years but have always loved them and we always had one or two living with us when I was growing up. They are thinking about filling out an application to adopt a dachshund. They have had dachshunds in the past.

I hope you and your husband are well.
Lisa Maggio  (Louis's mom!)

Adopted Approximately 2003

Hi Chris,

I was cruising the dachshund rescue sites and came across your new site. I thought you might like seeing pics of the two boys we adopted from you a few years back.

We got Gordan the long-haired red with the crooked nose in Jan. 2003. He is still a sweetheart.   In Nov. of the same year we adopted a scrawny little black wire hair named Tex. He is now lovingly known as Sausage.

Thought you might like to see another happy ever after.

Updated April 22, 2008

CHRIS,

Lucy is playing me like a cheap fiddle. I have even been accused by my wife as taking better care of the dog, than I do her.

She is saying that because she just got out of the hospital after a 2 week stay. My wife got a bad bug that was resistant to antibiotics.

I wanted to tell you that I am sending you another $50.00.  Please consider it a donation to help feed the dogs you are caring for. It might get you another week of dog food.

Speaking of dog food, Lucy is now placing a special order everyday out of the Stater Bros meat display counter. She is getting away with it because she seems to be smarter than her master. I've gone along willingly because the internet has done a job on the pet food industry, even saying that put-down dogs are in their mix labeled as animal by-products.

I took Lucy for her first walk a few days ago. She was so nervous that she wouldn't even take her first step, so the big dummy carried her for at least a mile. Then when I set her on the ground for the fifteenth time, she finally realized that if she didn't walk, she couldn't get back to home of the good life. She actually does a good job of walking.

When it comes to the food issue, if you have time, please email me and tell me what kind of dog food she WOULD eat while in your care. I am cooking way too much.

The other day one of the neighbor's cats jumped our fence into the back yard. Lucy was an interesting display of NOT what to do when an intruder comes into your space. Rather than taking on the nasty old cat, she ran around the pool and barked, always from a 50 foot distance away, while shaking in her own boots.

Finally the cat got bored and left!

To have enough space on my own bed for me to lay, I went to Walmart and purchased a dog bed, which I place on top of my bed. It defines the space where I want her to lay, and seems to be working most of the time.

I am in the process of cutting a dog door in the back wall of the house to help her improve bathroom habits.  I looked at her this morning and I think she is showing some  porterhouse weight gain. In my next life I want to be a rescued dog!

I should sign off, I am starting to ramble. I hope all is well with you. The check will be in the mail in the next few days.

Thanks for all your efforts

Richard Evans

Update March 2008

CHRIS,

I hope you find humor in this. It is written with that in mind.

Lucy is quite a dog. It is amazing how 10 pounds can almost rule the world. Her personality is changing by the minute, and we are having fun with her.

1)  She has already ordered porterhouse steak for dinner.

2)  She not only insists in sleeping in my bed, but sleeps so close  that I feel like I might fall out of bed.

3)  If she doesn't get her way, she will put her dry food in the water bowl to soak.

4)  She doesn't want just one or two rooms of the house. She wants them all.

5)  She has met the neighbor's dogs, but doesn't want to associate  with them because they are just too butt ugly.

6)  She is slowly learning where the outdoor restroom is.

7)  She is the most affectionate animal I've known.

8)  The entire half acre has been explored many times.  Overall, we give her a 10+ on her good days. With time she will relax, and feel like she owns it all.

Thank Syd for his shuttle service again, it worked well. I gave him cash, and I'm hoping that got back to you. Please tell me if we have been fair with you on her cost. I noticed that you didn't bill me any more for the few days I may have held you up, while we were on vacation. If you need anymore, please send me your address and I will send you a check.  I hope this email gives you good feelings for your efforts for these helpless animals. I wish we could deal with more, but Lucy is fillingthe empty places in our hearts.

Thanks again

Richard Evans

Duchess and Heidi

Adopted in 2004

We love updates from Duchess and Heidi.  Heidi was a puppymill mama, who came to rescue, unbeknownst to anyone pregnant.  After several weeks she soon gave birth to five beautiful little puppies.  The puppies were soon to be named, Hank, Tank, Duchess, Annie and Dixie the other little one went to a home and has not given us an update so we are unsure of the current name.  Annie Kay is currently living with the Anderson's, Dixie is living with Anderson's in-laws, Tank is still with rescue and Hank is in a happy home in Southern California.  When the furmomma of Duchess saw the mama Heidi, she became very fond of her.  A few weeks later, Heidi was going home with her daughter Duchess and her new momma Denise.  Here is an update from Duchess herself.

Updated

Hi all!

Me and my furmomma are just as happy as can be with our human mommy, Denise. She lets me crawl, cold nose first, all the way down in the covers at night to sleep, while Heidi sleeps on the pillow by her head. We follow our mommy everywhere she goes almost tripping her because we want to stay close. Heidi had some xrays done and the nice Dr. says that she has an enlarged heart, but mommy already knew that ‘cause Heidi loves her so much! She also has some mammary lumps that need to be taken off, but she is still just as happy as can be. I have grown into a very beautiful little girl with a very soft, velvety coat and a tongue that just loves to give kisses all over mommy’s face when she comes home.

Our sissy Deanna nursed a little Chihuahua back to health from almost going to doggy heaven from parvo and she brought him home for me to play with when he was all better. I just love him and we play all the time. I’m sending you a picture of all of us in our bed snuggling together.

We would love to have our pictures on your website so that everyone can see how happy we are. I would really like to come see everyone if mommy can ever find the time.

 Love, Duchess

Chris,

Buddy and I are doing just great.  He is definitely a one-person dog and is getting very used to things around here.  He is beginning to socialize with smaller dogs and is getting used to other people as well.  He is just the best and I am so glad that we are together.  Here are some pictures of him and one of he and I.

A friend of mine Ed Watson has a male dachshund and is interested in adopting a little female as well.  He is a wonderful person with a nice place and very kind.  I have referred him to you site
.

Mercedes-

Adopted in January of 2008

Hello!

It has been over a month now since I adopted my puppy from your rescue shelter.  I wanted to let you know that she is doing quite well!  I call her "Sadie" and she has definitely made herself at home here with us.  Her and Beans are the best of friends.  She is so playful and very affectionate.  She already knows where the treat cupboard is and what "Do you want to go for a walk?" means. :)  I love walking her in the mornings and taking her to run errands with me.  She loves riding in the car!  Everyone who meets her says she is so cute, and although she is friendly she is definitely a mommy's girl! :)

Thank you for making this possible.  Enjoy the pictures I attached!

Blessings,
Becky Wager

Hope

Adopted in December of 2007

This is Hope.  Little Hope was a puppy mill turn in.  As you can see by the little paw...if you want to call it that. That little hope has her paw skin but that is about it.  Apparently, we have been told by other rescues that there is a breeder in the San Diego area that is breeding these types as well, and they keep on doing it.  Don't despair or worry about little hope though. This is only a minor set back for her.  It does not keep her from running to her food bowl every day nor does it keep her from playing hard with all the others.

Claire

 Adopted in October of 2007

Claire found her forever home.  We are so happy that we could find her a home so quickly.  We are awaiting new updates and pictures to come!

Melissa

Adopted in October of 2007

Melissa found her forever home, in a home in the Los Angeles County area.  We are anxiously awaiting new updates and pictures!

Melissa is now known as Allie by her new owners...

UPDATED AS OF SEPTEMBER 9, 2008

She is a wonderful little gal and has blended very well with her parents and  buddies, Sassy and Behr.  She loves to sit outside and watch for squirrels.  When one comes along, she points with her nose and lets out a few high pitched barks.  The other two dogs come running and stand there with her while the squirrel/s talk back at them.  It's really funny to watch.  Sassy watches out for Allie and was attacked by a racoon while protecting Allie who emerged without a scratch but Sassy ended up at the Emergency Vet with twenty six bites on her front right leg.  Allie has gained a few pounds and feels very much a part of our family.  We couldn't have asked for a more loving dog, she is very gentle and compassionate.  We thank you for assisting us in filling a very sad void in our lives.

Bernie Sue

Adopted August 10, 2007

Hi Chris

Well, Bernie Sue is just wonderful.  She has made friends with Raisin and Paul very nicely.  She stands still and lets them sniff her all over and seems to not mind.  She sleeps with Raisin in the big chair in our bedroom. I am very happy that Raisin is so tolerant and I give Raisin a ton of extra love so she will not get jealous.  I will get a picture off to you as soon as I get organized.  Molly does not seem to be bother either way, what an odd duck she is, but she seems content enough.
So the news is good from the Whitmeys. Anna and Doug came over last night for dinner to meet Bernie Sue. They want to do time share doggie ownership with her.  I will let them take her on weekends in a couple of weeks.  Everybody is happy.
thanks a bunch, she is the perfect dog for us.
love Roxanne

Oggie

Little Redheaded Male from Sarah's Litter -Adopted July 2007

Updated July 23, 2007

We had a blast (as did the dogs), not only did they have fun at the Parade they got to play with our friends dogs Abby and Elvis. Sophie and Oggs even ganged up on Elvis and took away his toy (hes a sheltie pup)-- dont get me wrong.. when I say ganging up it was non- aggressive, but its funny seeing 2 dogs walk away with one bigger dogs toy.

Larry was very proud of his little man.

Last weekend they traveled up to the San Francisco area with us to visit with our friends kids. My friends husband kept telling Oggie that he needed to watch out because he was dragging his transmission on the ground.

The dogs will probably be disappointed this week as were not going anywhere! LOL

its great fun though.. and theyre wonderful little people, I mean dogs ;-)
Anyway- here is a pic of Oggie and Sophie napping in the wagon in between events.

You will be happy to know Oggie took best kisser and best in show. He is our little love bug- Maybe we should have named him Romeo.

Sadie

Adopted in March of 2007

Chris,
Sadie has made herself perfectly at home... she's tuckered out, curled up sleeping on the couch, perfectly wedged between my mom and sister.
When we got home she immediately sniffed every inch of the house... Clyde followed, completely bewildered.
She ate like a champ and she flips onto her back every chance she gets since it gets cheers and clapping from us every time.
Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt Sadie, she's already proven to be the perfect addition to our family.

Slinky and Stretch

Mason and Gracie -

(formerly known as "The Twins" Adopted January 2007)

Mason and Gracie were dubbed "The Twins" or "The Terrorists" by rescue because they loved to run through the house, bark, play wrestlemania roughly with the others and generally cause a stir throughout the household, while in foster care.  They were adopted by their new family in Fresno, California in the beginning of January 2007.  What a great way to start off the new year for these two!  These two have a great new home and are the spoiled little ones that they deserve to be!  We are happily awaiting new pictures and new updates about them to come.

UPDATED ON OCTOBER 22, 2009

Hello Dawn,

Here is our update on Candy and Roscoe (formerly known as “Oscar” at DHOGG).  We have attached some photos for you.

We adopted Candy from DHOGG almost 3 years ago.  Candy was a “throwaway” from a puppy mill.
She came to us very scared and timid.  The day after we brought her home we had to call Chris because we questioned whether or not we did the right thing by taking her away from DHOGG – she had become very attached to Chris.  She did not eat or drink water for two days. Chris told us to hang in there with her and she did come around.  She is the most amazing little girl and we can’t imagine her not being part of our family.  Candy had to have all of her teeth removed shortly after we got her – the result of years of neglect at the puppy mill.  This has not stopped her in her endless quest for food – having no teeth has not slowed her down in any way when it comes to eating!   Candy had to have disc surgery two months ago – she had a ruptured disc and it was truly a miracle that we were able to save her by catching it immediately and having the most wonderful doctor (Dr. Berry in Irvine) operate on her.  She has fully recovered and is like a brand new dog – we even asked Dr. Berry if he put a firecracker in her behind while she was on the operating table – she runs around like a puppy now and is loving life - we are so grateful to have her in our lives.  Roscoe (formerly known as Oscar) came to us a few months later when we decided that Candy should have a companion.  So off we went to visit Chris again – and we brought Roscoe home.  Quite a character, a tough little guy but so loving.  He is quite protective and particularly likes to patrol “his” yard constantly on the lookout for squirrels. He and Candy took to each other immediately an are inseparable!  Roscoe is quite the gentleman and always leaves a little food in his bowl for Candy – being the chowhound that she is she immediately goes to his bowl after finishing hers to see if there is something he might overlooked. It happens everytime they are fed – so cute! Roscoe was heartbroken while Candy was in the hospital for 4 days during her surgery.  He was lost without her.   These two amazing dogs have given us so much joy and hours of endless entertainment.  My husband and I are avid boaters and they have adapted quite nicely to the boating lifestyle – they particularly enjoy kayaking.  Roscoe stands on the front of the kayak like a masthead barking at algae and sea lions while Candy prefers to stretch out – just enjoying being paddled around!  Quite the princess.
Thank you to Chris and Sid for all they do – DHOGG is an amazing organization!

Original Information on Candy

Candy is a great example of what we here in rescue promote.  "The perfect fur-kid for the perfect family".  From the beginning Candy displayed behavior which made it very difficult for us to consider placing her with any home but a female only home.  Candy was a puppy mill turn over (who still bares the tattoo in her ears which display, not her name, but her number).  This little girl loves to shock us!  We were shocked to find Candy had given birth, just a day after we had taken her over a little over two years ago.  Then we were shocked to find that the mill that had turned her over did not even know she was pregnant with the lone beautiful puppy girl that she gave birth too.

After she had given birth to her puppy, she and her little girl named "Angel" became very very attached to one another and for a while we were considering adopting them out together because they depended so much on each other.  Soon though, they began to grow apart and we were comfortable adopting them out separately.  Fortunately for Candy's baby she was adopted in August of 2006.  Candy soon became independent and socialized with the other dogs in the foster home.  Despite all of her socialization and progression, she was still afraid of males.

So once again, we were all very shocked to find her little tail wagging the day her new mommy and daddy came to visit her on January 26, 2007.  She spent her first night in her new home making herself at home and going to her Daddy's side of the bed.  With a quick wag of the tail she was scooped up and placed in the big bed with her mommy and daddy.

We here at rescue could not be more happy for this whole situation.  When it comes down to it, Candy was simply waiting for the right mommy and daddy to come along.  We are all looking forward to more pictures and updates for Candy to come!!!

February 2, 2007 Update:

Hi Chris,

Candy is continuing to do well.  Her little tail is finally unwrapping itself out from under her behind.  We think she is slowly becoming comfortable in our home.  We still haven't heard a bark.  I know you mentioned that one of the puppies had been debarked.  Was it Candy?  Yesterday was the first time I had to go to work and be gone all day.  Needless to say I was very anxoius about leaving her with her new Dad all day.  Fritz said she looked for me for a little while after I left and then she attached herself to him.  He told me later that he was so flattered because he had been feeling just a little jealous that she seems to have favored me up to this point.  He had to leave for a few hours yesterday for work and he just couldn't bring himself to leave her so she went with him to a pre-recording session at a studio in West LA.  He is such a pushover!  Candy was the hit of the studio!

We are so happy to see her slowly coming out of her shell.  We read on another rescue site that it can take up to 4 weeks for a rescue dog's true personality to  come out.  I'm sure you have experienced this.  So it's kind of like slowly unwrapping a Christmas gift.  Every day we see a little more of Candy coming out from under.  We have noticed that she does not play with toys.  Hopefully that will change when she relaxes.

Anyway, just wanted to keep you in the loop.

Let us know about the piebald.

Regards,

Barbara

Kobe

Adopted in September 2006

(formerly Tyson and Big Moe)

Tyson was adopted by a wonderful couple last weekend, we are so happy that he has found a new forever home, especially the great environment that he has brought into!  We here at rescue know that puppies are work, and that it can get frustrating at times!   Hang in there!  We anxiously await updates and pictures about him from his new mommy and daddy.

Just an update on Kobe, the former Tyson.   We have renamed him because he has become quite a ball player.   Every evening my husband plays ball with him and he has a record catch of 12 in a row.  (our other Doxie never seemed interested in playing catch)
He is very smart--probably smarter than we are.    He has finally gotten the idea of doing his "duty" outside.   The way he asks out is just to sit in front of the door looking out.   No barking, just sitting there looking outside.
He has learned to sit on command-usually.   I have him sit before I feed him and then tell him it's okay to eat.
He loves his ball!   We have gates put up on the entrances to the kitchen area.   These are very nice gates I bought from Orvis.  But they are wood and Kobe purposely puts his ball through the spokes, into the other area, and then barks for us to retreive.   If we don't do as we're commanded and retreive the ball, he starts chewing on the spokes.   I've almost wanted to change his name to Beaver, as it looks like we've had a beaver in the kitchen.
When playing catch with him, sometimes he takes the ball to his water dish and drops it in and then fishes it out.   I'll try to attach a picture of him with a pan full of balls.   I thought if he got so much enjoyment out of dropping his ball in the water dish, he'd really have fun with a pan full.  It's about like a kid bobbing for apples.
If the sliding door is opened he will also poke the ball between the door and screen door and then either try and get it out or bark for us.   It seems he just trys to find a way to hide the ball.   This morning he dropped it in the pool and then came to the kitchen and got me and led me out to get it.  Don't worry, I don't go off and leave him alone in the pool area.
He is on a part raw diet.   I buy all his food at Centenialla, including an Organic canned food and also organic raw chicken patties.   I fed him half a can (small) a.m. and p.m., mixed with about 3/4 of the pattie and a handfull of organic dry.   He gets sliced apples and carrots for treats, and when I buy lettuce and clean it, I cut the end off for him to chew on (not iceberg).   We also have bought him a large knuckle bone which he enjoyed and would even try to carry it to bury.    If his picture comes through to you ok, you might notice a skinned spot on the top of his nose.    I gave him a marrow bone on day this week and after chewing on it he enjoyed trying to hide and bury it.  Of course he had to take his nose to do that, thus the skinned spot.
He is built differently than our other doxie.   Kobe seems to have a layer of fat just under his skin, whereas our other doxie  felt very muscular and solid.
One of his very bad habits is trying to eat anything and everything he can find--pulls up grass and eats, digs the roots of the Lily of the Nile as well as roses and will chew them, and any piece of wood or material that has fallen from a palm tree.   It seems his mouth has to be chewing constantly!   I wonder if he is neurotic?
We've even considred putting a mussel (I know that's not spelled right, but too lazy to look up and figured you'd know what I mean)  on him when he goes into the yard.
He has a good disposition.
Almost forgot, he loves to sneak up on the kitchen table!   If we don't pull our chairs completely away or shove them tight, he gets up on the table and then chews napkins or anything else he can find.  Today, (when I took the attached pix) I found him again on the table even tho' I had the chairs pushed tight.  I had watched him from around the corner, unbeknownst to him, and he will squeeze in front of the chairs under the table and actually shove a chair out to jump on it and then jump on the table.  Of course I don't yell at him as don't want him jumping off.
Do you suppose he will outgrow chewing on things he finds in the yard?

DACHSHUND HAVEN'S RESPONSE TO THE CHEWING:  SPRINKLE CAYENNE PEPPER IN THE AREAS WHERE YOU DON'T WANT THEM AROUND.  THE SMELL IS STRONG ENOUGH TO DETER THEM YET WON'T HURT THEM IF THEY DO GET A TASTE OF IT.

Update October 14, 2006

I swear he has doubled in size since we got him a few weeks ago.  He is so beautiful and such a sweet personality.   Ten days ago we "rescued" a nine lb. chihuahua from off the street and have been searching for his owner.  In the mean time "Skippy" and Tyson have become play mates and wear each other out as they play chase.   Tyson goes to the office with me every day and in the evening he insists on sitting with either myself or my husband, draping his limp body over our leg.   He reminds me of what a rag doll cat must be.   When you try and pick him up he rolls over on his back and just goes limp.  He is curious about everything, picking up leaves, sticks, clogs of dirt, rocks. (I really have to watch him).  He has so much energy.

Kaylie Runkle

Adopted in November of 2005

Dear Sid & Chris
I thought you might like to see the baby girl in her new home She has become so special that she has sleeping privileges in our bed at night. We are so happy to have her. The big dog and her take naps together. When they race through the house it sounds like a hundred dogs running. She is so quick that he has a hard time keeping up. When he does she dives under the chairs and stares out at him as if to say I am just to fast for you. Any way we are very happy with her. Thanks again for introducing us to the Dachshund line of dogs. We think their great. If the home owners Assn would allow us more than two dogs we would come back and take another. Thank you so much.

Yours truly,
David and Sandy Runkle

Phoebe

Adopted in February 2006

UPDATED OCTOBER 22, 2009

Thank you for the email. It is my pleasure to write a short note on our adopted Tri-Dapple, Phoebe. My husband and I adopted Phoebe three years ago. She came to us in a sorry state, even though the rescuer's had tried their best to make her life comfortable. She was a miniature and the cutest face. Unfortunately, she was 28 lbs. and growing. She was a breeding Dachshund which meant her calcium level was very low. Two weeks after the adoption we took her to our vet and she had her teeth removed with the exception of one....her jaw had collapsed in surgery. Her jaw was wired for 21 days.

When she arrived home, what a difference, after the surgery. She was free of infection. My husband and I have another elderly adopted standard dachshund named Bruno, he is 13 years old,  who love his walks morning and evening. We started walking Phoebe twice a day. First, to the top of our cal-de-sac, then a quarter of a mile, then one mile and so on. She now weighs 13 lbs....half her original weight...and is a fabulous little girl.

She still does not trust too many people but slowly she is accepting of strangers. Bruno, has always been a protective animal and now  looks after Phoebe. He allows Phoebe to steal all the toys in the basket but holds at bay with his food dish.

What a joy these two are to my family! When Bruno passes we will definitely adopt another rescue dachshund. Sincerely, June and Tom Fullerton.  PS. Did I tell you Phoebe now walks 3-4 miles a day?

Updated January 6, 2009

Dear Sid and Chris,

Happy New Year to you both. Tom,myself, Matt and Hayley were in Acapulco for two weeks over Christmas and New Year. Bruno and Phoebe were in the Pet Resort for their stay. While there Phoebe had surgery.

We had delayed it so she would be there over the holidays. While having her physical and shots in November the vet discovered she had a rock in her stomach. When removing it they also found a piece of brown leather which could have been attached to a leather button. The vet gave the items back to us (as if we wanted them) so we could check. We have no leather in our home but do have a few rocks. Phoebe, along with Bruno, are scavengers, so she could have picked up those items anywhere. She is doing well. Has a two inch scar in her belly but was thoroughly spoilt by the staff at the hospital....they love her. Tom comments "she is the most expensive free dog we have ever had." Bruno, is a close second with his teeth cleaning ever other year and his allergies to meat products. He has special food of Salmon and Potato otherwise he blows up like Dumbo.

It is amazing how time has flown. We have had Phoebe three years next month. Her and Bruno are so attached now. Take care. June Fullerton

Initial Update

Dear Chris and Sid, Happy New Year!!!

I cannot believe it has almost been a year since we adopted Phoebe. She had her yearly check up and was passed in "excellent health". Everybody loves Phoebe at the Animal Hospital. I hope you received our Christmas card with our daughter and the furkids. Still haven't heard Phoebe bark, she just whines when I am preparing their dinner. Then again, there is really no reason for her to bark. Everything is perfect for her.
Bruno, incidentally, is a changed dog. He no longer gets anxiety attacks when we place him in the kennel....he now has Phoebe so he is happy.

Hope all is well at your end.

Regards, June

Dipstick  AKA "Dippy"

Adopted in December 24, 2005

Dipstick's momma was a puppymill turnover.  And like most turnovers, they were unaware of her mother's pregnancy.  Surprise, surprise, a few weeks later, Dipstick was born, along with her sister, Patches, a long haired pie bald, who looks identical to her, and a black and tan short hair like dippy.

Dipstick was adopted by the Kozlowski family from Yorba Linda and joins her little piebald sister named Enya.  They are a great pair and she is thriving in her new home.

Patches- Adopted in December 2005

Patches was adopted by family in California in December of 2005, she is happy and thriving.

Checkers

 Adopted in December of 2005

Checkers is now living with his forever home and is thriving.  More of an update to come soon.

Olie

Adopted in November of 2005

Olie was adopted by his forever home in November of 2005.  He is happy and thriving with his family.

Dixie Doxie

Adopted December 24, 2005

Dixie Doxie was adopted by the Anderson Family "in- laws" the same time as Annie Kay.  Miss Dixie was adopted by Cherie who is also Dodger's mommy.  Dodger dog needed a playmate as he was constantly wearing out his playmate Cinnabun ( a 30 pound Dalmation).  Dixie came along at just the right time.  She is fearless and runs around the house chasing her big brother and her big brother is very protective over his "little girl".    She has so much energy that now even Dodger dog is getting worn out!  It was a match made in Dachshund Heaven.

Annie Kay Anderson

Adopted December 24, 2005

Annie Kay was born on October 23, 2005 to a puppy mill mama that was turned over to rescue.  Her daddy Robby was thrilled!  You see, ever since his other little red headed girl,  Heidi Josephine passed away in 2001, Robby said that he would only have another little red head girl if it was the right time.  Well, little red-headed girls have come and gone, and Robby has let them all go to new forever homes.  But when Robby heard that the little girl had been born and seen her picture when she was only 14 hours old, he knew that it was meant to be his little girl.  The little girl came from Heidi's litter.  She lives with her, cousins, uncles and aunties in the Anderson household and has the run of the place.  Thank goodness, Annie' Grammy and Grampy just added a huge new room to the house so that Miss Annie and the rest of the Anderson Herd can have lots of room to play inside but also a lot of room to play outside too!

Annie loves to make a mess, but really loves to spend quality time with her Daddy whether it be surfin the net...  or just lounging around .  We will update this as time goes on.

Minnie  (Formerly known as Katie)

Hello friends,
We are sending you some pictures of Minnie our amazing
weenie dog, you know her as "Katie". We want to thank
you for this wonderful dog. she is a great camper
(does not like the water. My kids are so attached to
her. She especially loves my oldest and is good at
calming her down. She suffers from ADHD and Tourette's
(a lot of anxiety). She loves to sit and watch my
daughter play piano.
Jessica says she even has a
favorite song.

She is very playful and smart, keeps the
cats out of the yard, really good beggar, is a great
clean up crew (floor), still loves carrots, pea's and
poop's on demand, rolls over, lays, sits, loves to
play and race around the house, goes to her bed when
told and has quite a few ideas of her own. We are
still working on the speak thing. I think she thinks
we are crazy. We can't thank you enough. We love her
so much. My husband is quite attached to her and he is
the one who did not want a dog.  Thank you for giving
her to us.

Biscotti Ray

Adopted in 2004

Biscotti Ray is Onyx Mae's little chocolate brother.  This is a picture of him and his daddy Steve at Auntie Ronna's house, where his cousins (the Anderson herd) lives.  Biscotti is from Dachshund Haven and was rescued about a year ago.   Biscotti is another sad story.  He was bought as a puppy and raised to be the age of about 2, when his owner's decided that they no longer wanted a dog...they wanted a puppy.  So the logical thing for them to do, was to throw him in a kill (cruel  thinking people)  shelter, where rescue saved him.  One of the problems his daddies thought Onyx was having was that she was lonely during the day while they were at work, so they went back to Dachshund Haven to look for a baby brother or sister for Miss Onyx.  The day they went to visit the adoptable dachshunds they were upset to find that Biscotti Ray (then known as Snoopy) was set to be adopted the next day by a couple who ended up never showing up.  Two weeks later, Onyx went to go pick up her new baby brother.  They have been inseparable since.  Another success story of Dachshund Haven rescue.

Onyx Mae

Adopted in June 20, 2003

Onyx Mae was a little girl who lived in Texas at one time.  Her trip to California proved fortunate because here she was able to find her forever home.  Onyx unfortunately had some major separation issues when she was first adopted in June of 2003 by her daddy Richard and her daddy Steve.  Onyx was another unfortunate case of abandonment, where her prior owners would leave her outside for days and weeks at a time, with no food, companionship or attention.  This made for a very hard situation when her daddies would leave for work.  She decided that she would tell everyone that she was unhappy, by tearing up seat cushions, blankets and having "accidents" everywhere on purpose.  Two years later, this dainty little 30 pound girl (who thinks she is a lab dog, and thinks nothing of hurling herself on an unsuspecting lap, is happy, healthy and has little if any separation anxiety.  Onyx lives with her brother, Biscotti (also from Dachshund Haven) and their daddies, and their Nanie in Whittier, California.

Onyx is the half breed cousin of Stewart Edward, Sticky Lynn, Baron Joseph, Toby Ray, Harley Arnold, Sweet Pea and Roxy May (and soon to come Annie Kay).

Dodger Dog

Adopted in June of 2004

Dodger was adopted by the Anderson Family "In-Laws" to be in June of 2004.  Dodger is now 14 months old and is a very long dog.  He is extremely handsome and hyper.  He loves his step-sister Cinnabun who he lives with.   Often Cinnabun is the one who has to walk away after a hard day's play.  He loves all of his cousins including Stewart Edward, Baron Joseph, Toby Ray, Harley Arnold, SweetPea and Sticky Lynn.   He spends his time traveling back and forth to Norwalk.

Roxy, Cinnabun and Dodger.

Roxy May

Adopted in April of 2004

Roxy May was adopted by Paul (brother) of the Anderson Family in April of 2004.  She originally came from Texas during the same time Harley did.    Paul's dog, Schnitzel passed away in August of 2002.  Paul was overcome with grief and was determined to never get close to another dog like that again.  That was until Roxy came over for a weekend foster.  Paul saw her and immediately fell in love with her.  He decided that he was going to adopt her and nothing was going to stop him.  She is now happy and healthy.  She is a huge princess and diva of the household.  She travels to and from Norwalk where she spends time with her step-sister, Cinnabun (30 pound dalmation) and her cousin Dodger (also a rescue).  When in La Habra, she spends time with her cousins Stewart Edward, Toby Ray, Harley Arnold, SweetPea and Sticky Lynn.    In 2004 Roxy May lost had something of a calcium buildup in her back,  within a few days she could not walk and was losing most of her ability to control her bowels and bladder.   The first advice was given to put her down.  Her daddy was not going to give up.   She had to be rushed to the emergency room at 11 in the evening one night, where she underwent emergency back surgery.  Roxy had her surgery and underwent a very long grueling recovery period in a playpen separated from her cousins and playmates and had to walk with a scarf around her hind legs for almost four months.

Roxy is now doing wonderfully and is affectionately known as "burnout" in the household.  She has most of the use of her legs back but still loses control and slides often into walls or furniture when she runs in the house on the hardwood floors.

Sweet Pea

Adopted September 18, 2004

TO READ MORE ABOUT PUPPY MILLS CLICK THE Perils of Puppy Mills page

SweetPea was adopted by the Anderson family in September of 2004.  Originally meant for Robby (brother) who wanted a dog to move out with, Dawnie (sister) and her parents fell in love with her and with Robby's move out plans fell through they did not want to let SweetPea go.  Dawnie has major health issues and enjoyed Sweet pea's demeanor and attitude and the fact that Stewart Edward (big dachshund brother) fell in love with her and began to get very overprotective of her became more reason to not let her go.

Sweet pea originally came from Texas and was known as a "Puppy Mill Baby".  She lived her entire life in a Puppy mill producing litters.  She tops the scales at 7 pounds and has tiny features.  She is adorable.  She is approximately 8 years old and had almost a litter a year once she was able to do so.  She lived her life in a wire cage and because of her hard life, has problems with her feet because of her staying in a wire cage, fecal matter and urine most of her life.    She had little if any human contact during her time in the mill, but despite that has remained a very sweet and loving dog.  Despite, her horrible beginnings in life, the moment she came into rescue's possession she had the ability to start a new life.  She has episodes where her old wounds open up on her feet but other than that has no health problems.  She is a good little girl and will live the rest of her life here in the Anderson household.  We love her very much and in the short time she has been here, has made a huge and profound impact on everyone.

SweetPea and her brother Stewart spend much of their time traveling to and from Dawnie's office where they spend the day with her at work.

Sweetpea has four brothers, Stewart Edward, Baron Joseph, Toby Ray and Harlequin "Harley" Arnold and one sister, Bootsi "Sticky" Lynn.

Harlequin "Harley" Arnold

Adopted November 22, 2003

Harley is another double dapple boy who was sent from Texas rescue in November of 2003 for our family to join Toby, who had now started to tear up the house because Baron had injured his back and was not as interested in playing anymore.  This drove Toby nuts and he needed a playmate that could keep up with him.   Harley is deaf, and has even worse eyesight then Toby due to the double dapple gene but once again, this will not slow him up.

Harley is 3 years old and is another happy, healthy and loving dachshund.  We love him very much.  He has all the typical dachshund traits including being extremely stubborn.  He wants what  he wants when he wants it.  We say he looks like a bunny rabbit.  He is a sweet boy who has to sleep on you or touching you so that he knows when you are not in bed with him.

Harley has  3 brothers Stewart Edward, Toby Ray (rescue) and Baron Joseph (rescue) and two sisters, Bootsi "Sticky" Lynn (Chihuahua terrier mix also a rescue) and SweetPea (rescue).

Toby Ray

Adopted in February 8, 2002

Toby Ray was adopted by the Anderson Family in February of 2002 he was 6 months of age.  The original intent was to give Baron Joseph, who was tearing up the house,  a playmate to get rid of some of his excess energy.

Toby is a double dapple dachshund and tops the scales at 8 pounds.  He is extremely short, chubby and compact but is a tough little man who doesn't take any "stuff" from anyone, including his cousin who is a 30 pound Dalmatian.  Toby unfortunately is deaf (double dapple gene) and can't see that well, but these things are only minor set backs for him, for he is completely healthy, happy and loves to play with all his brothers and sisters and cousins (most of who are from Dachshund Haven Rescue).  He has a high screech bark and loves to bark at everything.  Toby loves his daddy also known as Baron's daddy.

Toby has  3 brothers Stewart Edward, Baron Joseph (rescue) and Harlequin "Harley" Arnold (Texas rescue) and two sisters, Bootsi "Sticky" Lynn (Chihuahua terrier mix also a rescue) and SweetPea (rescue).

Baron Joseph

Adopted in May 13, 2001

Baron Joseph was adopted by the Anderson Family in May of 2001 when he was approximately 2 to 3 years old.  Baron came to us for a weekend after our little Heidi Joe (rescued 7 years earlier red dachshund 8 years old) passed away due to complications from Cushing's Disease.  It was an extremely sad situation in our home as the whole family was devastated.   We were only going to take him for the weekend to Foster him for the weekend.  Well, you can see how that ends up.

When he came to us, he had recently come from a Shelter in Riverside.  He had been malnourished and because of it, he had no hair on his ears and little hair on his head.  He was a happy healthy little boy who instantly bonded with his new daddy (shown above).   Our family decided that maybe Heidi Joesephine had been taken to play in heaven, because now Baron was in need of a new happy home.   We took him in and every time we celebrate his day of coming to us, we remember Heidi Joe.

In 2004 Baron participated in the 2004 Wiener National Wiener Races.  He didn't win, but did a good job anyways.

Baron has 3 brothers Stewart Edward (dachshund stray found 7 years earlier), Toby Ray (rescue) and Harlequin "Harley" Arnold (Texas rescue) and two sisters, Bootsi "Sticky" Lynn (Chihuahua terrier mix also a rescue) and SweetPea (rescue).
