Please notice that all of our
little ones have not been tested with cats or small children. So
unfortunately, we do not know how they react with them.

However, sometimes they come to
us with these little quirks and we will be sure to inform you of anything
that we know of their attitude and personality quirks.

Most dogs especially the older ones
(12 months and older) are house trained and can either use a doggie door or
have a door left open for them; however most of the time there WILL be a few
accidents in the beginning as all of the dogs are nervous and uncomfortable.
But with the proper discipline this behavior should stop within a few
weeks.)

Any dachshunds that have longhaired or wirehaired coats will need to be
groomed on a regular basis, otherwise things can get caught in their coat
and lack of grooming can cause hair matting, which can be painful for the
dogs if not properly taken care of. Many local groom shops should have
knowledge on how to properly groom your longhaired or wirehaired dachshunds.

Also please know that even though we spend a lot of time with these
dogs, caring, vetting and evaluating them and their personalities, each
dog is an individual and although may act one way with us, may have a
different attitude with other people. This is what makes "Meet and
Greets" so important, please make sure that every person (and dog) who
will be living in the home, with the dog, is present at any "Meet and
Greet" that is scheduled.

Rosco

Rosco is a
pretty little one year old Red tweenie boy who was found wandering the
streets in Riverside County.
He
would be a great dog in any home. He is very active and likes to play with his adopted
brothers and sisters and would do well with another dog. Or if not
another dog, he would like to have a younger active person who has
dachshund experience (above the age of 10) who will pay a lot of attention
to him and play with him a lot.
Rosco is also a very loving boy, who would also appreciate a person that
he could lounge with and relax and have a warm lap to sit on from time
to time as he likes his downtime.
If he were to go into a home with no playmate, he will need someone who
is home a majority of the time to pay attention to him.
He is
fully vaccinated, vetted and neutered and is ready to be placed.
Tax
deductible adoption fees for Rosco are to be announced.

Fritz's full story, view the link below.
Fritz our
little mange boy, who was looking so horrible when we first got him, is
now fully recovered, and needs to find his forever home. He is a
happy and active little guy who deserves a great forever home.
Obviously, when you read that he has mange, people's first reaction is
that it could be contagious. Fortunately, for Fritz and us, he had
the non contagious kind, that was easily treatable. He looks
wonderful now, although he does have some scarring, where he would scratch
his head and bleed and some spots on his back.
But this
means nothing to Fritz, because first, he can't see them, and secondly, if
you didn't know his story and how bad he actually was when we first got
him, you would never have guessed it by looking at him now. He looks
great, acts like a good little boy and is very active.
Fritz can
go into an open home. He should have a playmate(s) to play with or
if not, someone who will enjoy playing with him, walking him and all
around just spending alot of quality time with him. He would be okay
with children over the age of 8, with dachshund experience.
He is not
picky, he would not mind either a brother and/or a sister...just someone
around his age, who he can play wrestlemania with and snuggle with when he
takes naps.
Tax
deductable fees are to be announced.

Lyra, Lil Red and
Midnight
These
3 tiny girls are from an owner turn in. They are very sweet mini's.
Lyra
and Lil Red are both females. Lil Red is of course a red smooth and
Lyra is a pretty red dapple girl. They are both mini's topping off
at maybe 6 pounds each. These two are attached at the hip to one
another and are each other's shadows. They are extremely bonded and
love to sleep, eat, play and lounge together. These two girls are
also very loveable and would love nothing more than to live together with
their new forever home. They require the basics, food, water, play
and a warm lap to lay down on. If you sit, they will be on your lap.
We
will fully vet, vaccinate and spay all three dogs before they find their
forever home.
We
are currently unsure whether or not we will separate the three of them.
The ideal situation would be to see these three go together, however,
Midnight, is not bonded to Lyra and Lil Red, the way Lil Red and Lyra are
bonded to one another.
As of
right now, these two little girls are completely dependent on one another
and should be adopted out together. This MAY change, but as of now,
these two girl need to be placed together in a dachshund experienced home,
with children over 10, who have dachshund experience. These two are
pretty mellow, but often they get a wind in them, and they like to run and
prance and play wrestlemania with one another.
Midnight is something we have never seen before. She is a drop dead
beautiful black smooth dachshund. That is right BLACK dachshund.
No tan marks on this pretty girl.
Midnight, is a very independent girl. She is playful and active, she
is just not playful and active with Lil Red and Lyra as much as we thought
an extremely bonded trio would be.
We
were told that the three were bonded and should stay together, but as we
go about observing them, we notice that there is not a close bond, like
other bonded pairs that we have that must stay together, other than Lyra
and Lil Red.
After
further observation and evaluation, our recommendation to adopt them
separate may change. We will keep everyone notified as to the best
way to proceed as time goes on!
All
three girls will be spayed, vetted and fully vaccinated before adoption.
Tax
deductable fees will be announced.
If
you are interested in adopting one, both or all three of these girls,
please fill out an
application.

Hope
Click to
This
cute little girl was found wandering the parking lot at City of Hope
Hospital (Hence the name), with no collar, no avid chip and no id on her
whatsoever. She was thirsty, hungry and scared and had been running
the streets for a while. They are estimating at least a week before
she was finally chased down, cornered and rescued by several concerned
people. The vet has found her perfectly healthy. She will need
to be spayed before placement. She will be fully vetted, vaccinated
and spayed before she will be ready for her forever home.
Hope is
a gorgeous girl and has the sweetest demeanor, but we have found her to be
a bit nervous and a little sketchy around people who she meets on an
initial basis, but as she gets to know you she will relax a bit and come
to you.
We
believe she needs to be in a dachshund savy home, with people who will pay
attention to her and love her. Hope is an independent girl and she
would do okay by herself with a lot of attention from her humans, or she
would thrive and be even more playful with another dachshund, as she will
turn around and be playful with foster brothers and sisters anytime the
mood strikes her.
Hope
would do well in a home with children over the age of 13 with dachshund
experience. We do not know how she will do with cats.
Although, this goes for all people who own a dachshund or a dog in
general, whoever adopts her will want to be mindful and watchful of doors
and fences. Hope has proven that given the chance she will run and
try to escape if she is in a situation she finds uncomfortable or if she
simply gets the opportunity, so whoever adopts her will need to be
watchful of doors and fences. This includes people who have
gardeners and people coming in and out of the house alot.
Tax
deductable adoption fees will be set soon.

are interested in adopting Hope, please fill out an
application.

CoCo Puff
CoCo Puff is a beautiful chocolate recessive wirehaired female. She
was from the same irresponsible breeder turn over to the overwhelmed
rescue that "Slinky" came from. She was labeled a long hair haired
doxie. But we disagree, we believe her to be a recessive wire haired
dachshund as her coat feels ver wirey. She resembles a shaved wire
haired dachshund at all times.
CoCo Puff would be a great dog in any
home. She is very active and likes to play with his adopted
brothers and sisters and would do well with another dog. Or if not

Chandler

Chandler is a sweet English Cream long haired male, who was abandoned on a
property in Riverside County. He is absolutely adorable and a
loveable boy who needs to find a forever home soon.
The former owner had both Chandler and a female, but went through a nasty
divorce. Rather than taking both dogs, one half of the couple took
the female and the other half was to take the male, only the person that
was supposed to take the male, did not care anything for Chandler at all.
In fact, the person did not even remember Chandler's name. The
people that turned Chandler over were the couple that bought the property
and found Chandler hanging outside all the time, where he was all day and
most of the nights.
The new owners wanted to keep him, however, age and inability and the fact
that he did not get along with their cat, kept the new owners of the
property from being able to keep him, so they contacted rescue.
He
will need to be loved and spoiled rotten with someone who will treat him
with the love and respect he deserves. He needs to be walked, played
with and ideally should have a partner to be with and play with as
he is young healthy and is pretty active and playful with his fosters
brothers and sisters.
If
he were to be an only dog, he would need an active person, someone who is
home a majority of the time, and has time to give him, play and walk with
him as well as even just lounge with him and give him one on one
attention. This person should have dachshund experience, someone who
knows their quirks and attitudes and will teach and re-enforce good
behaviors!
He
is fully vetted, vaccinated and neutered.
Tax deductable fees will be set for Chandler.

Suzy Q
aka "Slinky"
Click to

Suzy
Q aka "Slinky" is an absolutely gorgeous chocolate pie/dapple long haired
mini female. Slinky has both dappling and pie specks in her so we
put both (we don't need debates). Slinky is from a breeder turn over
who were forced to turn over their entire stock to an already overwhelmed
rescue.
Thankfully, we worked very hard working and arranging a transport with
some fabulous volunteers and sponsors and we were able to get these
dachshunds to us, where they were no longer in danger of being euthanized
in a cold shelter because there was no room for them.
We
were told that the breeder was responsible, but after caring for Slinky
for several weeks, we can now see that the breeder did not have these dogs
best interest in heart.
Little Slinky has some minor back leg issues, which cause her to walk,
quite literally like a "slinky". Don't feel sorry for her, she gets
around just fine and is just as playful as the rest of them, however, we
notice that at times she can be a little achy.
We
have had the vet look over her and after several exams, the vet has
found no disc or spinal issues. The vet is now theorizing that she
has some minor lesions on her hips, which cause her to walk the way she
does. We hope to confirm a diagnosis soon so that the proper
treatment can be started (if any). This may be something that
Slinky's humans will have to help her deal with.
Slinky will be fully vetted, vaccinated and spayed before she is placed.
Please know that we will inform you of the type of home that is best for
Slinky once we have a diagnosis.
Tax
deductible adoption fees for Suzy Q aka Slinky are to be announced.

Allie and the Puppies
Allie is
an absolutely beautiful 2 year old female red headed long hair (with black
undertones) who is currently nursing three (3) beautiful puppies (2
females and 1 male), born on July 20, 2010.
She is
an owner/breeder turn over who turned her over because she was clearing
out her stock. We are currently unsure who the father is, as the
breeder was also a pomeranian breeder as well. So she may have given
birth to half pomeranian and half dachshund puppies or she could be
nursing full dachshund puppies we are unsure at this point. As
time goes on, we should see more of what type of puppies they are, as
whether they are half or full, they will all need forever homes when the
time comes!
We are
unsure how Allie's true tempermant is, so we cannot tell you the best type
of home to go in at this point. However, we can tell you initially
she is a great big sweetheart! She is cuddle monster and is
extremely mellow. However, her attitude may change a bit, once she
is no longer nursing, and is spayed. She can be playful when she
wants to, but most of the time, is spent being a mama to her babies.
We were
told she is afraid of men, however, we have seen nothing that proves that
at all!
These
puppies are not going anywhere for quite some time and neither is Allie,
any updates will be on this site. Allie will be fully vetted,
vaccinated and spayed before she is placed in her forever home.

PUPPY REMINDER
PLEASE DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL ASKING, BEGGING OR PLEADING TO ADOPT, BUY,
VIEW OR VISIT THE PUPPIES AS ANY UPDATES WILL BE ON THIS PAGE.
This is a rescue site
and not a breeder site, so we do not "sell" any of our little ones to
anyone for any reason.
If you want a puppy,
and do not wish to go through the process of adoption, then you can
contact a reputable breeder if you choose to do so.
We are a rescue, more
often then not, we do not have a nice work relationship with breeders or
puppy mills as they continue to defeat our purpose of rescue by breeding
way too many dogs in our society that has too many unwanted ones already.
The only exception to this, is if these breeders and mills decide to
turnover some of their so called "rejects" and most of the time the
relationship ends with them turning over their unwanted little ones to us
and further they often wish to remain anonymous.

Brutus and Charlotte are a adorable bonded pair that came from an owner

heads. Unfortunately, major family issues prompted the owner to turn

former owner. They were both loved before, and we want nothing

Brutus and Charlotte both have very sweet demeanors and once they trust
you and their surroundings, they become the sweethearts we know them to

Brutus is a little bigger and tends to be a barker. We are working
on that with him, and hope to break him of his habit of barking at shadows

Charlotte

Charlie
Charlie is a beautiful red and white pie bald smooth boy looking for a new

He is a very sweet and laid back boy and loves to wag his tail, however,
until he gets his bearings and trusts with a certain person, he is a bit

behavior would be a permanent thing, as with all dogs, especially rescue

He would be a good lap dog for someone, who is home a lot and can baby and

They both are neutered and up to date with all shots. They will need
a home that is patient and understanding and a dachshund savvy owner who
will appreciate and enjoy their silliness and someone who is home a bit to
work with them on their shyness and fear. We don't believe they
would do well with children, so we suggest teenagers or older with these

barker and we are working with him on that to try to break him of that
habit.
They are both housebroken. They can be adopted together or separate as
long as the situations are right for them. They both should have a
partner to play with. We are unsure on how they would do with children
at this time.
The tax deductible adoption fee for Buster and Bow is $ 200.00 or $125.00 for one.
If you are interested in these guys please submit an
application.

It
is common for most dogs to go through separation anxiety and fear when they
go into a new home from adoption, it is usually calmed when the dog realizes
after a few weeks that he or she is safe and will not be going anywhere
because their new families love them. If you are applying to adopt you must
automatically know that this IS a more than a possibility for your new
adoptee to react this way.
AND IN RARE SITUATIONS DOGS MAY GO
THROUGH EXTREME SEPARATION ANXIETY WHERE IT CAUSES A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON
THEIR HEALTH.
PLEASE
GO TO THE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS PAGE TO SEE A SECTION ON
SEPARATION ANXIETY.

Dachshund
Haven Official Rules and Adoption Policies
All dachshunds adopted
through "Dachshund Haven of Garden Grove" shall be fully vaccinated,
spayed/ neutered and all known illnesses or personality quirks shall be
addressed to and disclosed to the person adopting the dachshund(s). All
spays/neuters and vaccinations and health issues will be addressed before
hand however, after the adoption process takes place, taking your newly
adopted little one to your own vet is always wise as it establishes the dog
in their records. Once adopted the adopter is fully responsible for any
and all vet bills including updated shots and yearly exams along with any
other medical care the dog may or may not need.
Adoption
fees are decided by Chris Jacobson are NOT up for negotiation. Fees are set
based on how much we have invested in the dog. For example, we pay for
spay/neuter on the dog(s), their dentals if they need them and most of them
do, and then their vaccinations and then we take into consideration how long
we have had the dog in our care and how much time we have spent working with
the dog. Age, sex, coloring and coat type, has nothing to do with our
fees. Adoption fees are non-refundable.
When
dachshunds are set as a pair there is usually a reason for it. Due to
bonding, whether sibling bonding or just plain friendly bonding over time, a
pair is a pair and "Dachshund Haven" will not separate and adopt one or
another.
If
you are considering adopting a dachshund and want to visit one, than
arrangements can be made by emailing or telephoning Chris Jacobson for
visits. WE ARE NOT AN OPEN FACILITY FOR PEOPLE TO SHOW UP AND BROWSE OR
PLAY WITH DOGS. ANY POTENTIAL ADOPTION OR MEET AND GREET MUST HAVE AN
APPOINTMENT .
Adopting
a dachshund is a big decision as it requires responsibility and love. A
dachshund will be held for one week while a decision is made, after that if
no contact than the "furkid" will be placed back up for adoption to another
adopting person.
We
appreciate contact, so if you decide that the time is not right to adopt
than a courtesy call or email to say such would be appreciated and your name
and application will be kept for future reference.
"Dachshund
Haven of Garden Grove" would like to remind everyone that adopting a rescue
dog is different than buying a puppy from a breeder or a pet store. Often
the dachshunds have been through a lot and because of it some may have
behavioral issues or quirks which need to be worked on. Most of the time,
we work with them and ease them out of it, but sometimes the hurt is so bad
it never really goes away, which discourages people and often finds
dachshunds back at rescue or in shelters. These are not "bad" dogs, they
just need to time to adjust, to be loved and cared for and the comfort of a
stable home. But, if at any time you take possession of one of "Dachshund
Haven's" furkids" and you find that you honestly cannot take care or that
the situation is just not working out, than "Dachshund Haven" CAN AND WILL
TAKE THE DOG BACK in order to keep them out of the kill shelters.
Certain
dogs come with certain quirks or behavioral problems. Applications will be
reviewed closely as certain dogs cannot be placed in certain environments.
Please be as honest as you can because these fur-kids will becoming a
member(s) of your family. Some dachshunds do well with children, others do
not, some do great with men, some do better with women. Usually dachshund
by nature have what we lovingly call "short man's syndrome" and have issues
with bigger dogs, some don't have any fear at all.
No home will be
considered if the housing complex does not allow pets. We do not allow our
dogs to be "hidden" in apartments, condos or any rental homes.
Dachshund Haven of
Garden Grove Rescue and Sanctuary adopt our dogs to homes where the dogs
will live in indoor life as a house pet, and companion and to be exercised
only in a fenced yard OR in an open outdoors situation with leashes only.
Our dogs should not be kept outdoors while no one is home to supervise or
for very long periods of time (even with other dogs present, no matter the
size or situation).
You
must be over 21 years old to adopt a dachshund. If you plan on adopting
than the dog must be for you. We do not allow "gifts" of dachshunds. If
you live with other family members, roomates, etc. than they must approve of
adopting a rescue dog. "Dachshund Haven" reserves the right to conduct a
home inspection before placing the dachshund.
No
home, condo or apartment complex will be considered without a fence. As well
as any home, condo or apartment complex with an open non-fenced pool.
If you are interested in a puppy, than a proper adoption process must be
done. A proper application with true and correct information, a proper
"Meet and Greet" and a home visit will be scheduled. We do not for any
reason give out referrals to breeders or puppy mills. Bribes or promises of
donations are not acceptable and will not be considered in any way shape or
form. Any emails sent to us asking to "purchase a dog" will not be
responded to.
Dachshund
Haven of Garden Grove" reserves the right to refuse to adopt any dog to
anyone that we feel is unsuitable for a dog. |
