An Important Message from Chris, President of DHOGG

In regards to turning over a dog to Dachshund Haven:

While we would like to be able to take in every dachshund who needs rescue, we are not able to do so.  This is not a facility, it is our home and for that reason, we must limit ourselves to the number of dogs coming into rescue at one time.  As they are adopted, we then have room for more.  Please do not make the statement that "if you don't take my dog immediately, I'll be forced to dump him/her in the shelter".

It has been a very busy/crazy year for rescue.  Between the economy and breeders shutting down, we have been overwhelmed at times.

Unfortunately, right now, due to times, we are forced to limit how many dogs we take in.

As great as it would be to be able to take in every dachshund, it then becomes overwhelming and not fair to the ones already in rescue.   Unlike other rescues, we have no foster homes, and all rescues are under our roof.

WE are responsible for the vetting, food, supplies for all of them.  We do not have donors or sponsors right now and therefore are limited in what we can do at this time.  Should the situation change, we can update everyone then.

As much as we would like to "save" them all, it's just not possible for us at this time.

A quick note about animals & "Craig's List"

Lately we have been browsing the internet and have found, a unbelievable amount of dog's, both pure bred dogs and mutt's online offering them either free or for a nominal fee to a "good home".    Although we respect everyone's rights to do with your animals what you will, we would ask people if you know anyone who is offering a dog online for free to try to talk them out of it or ask them to be careful when doing this and to ask for a vet reference that you can check out before turning the dog(s) over first.

We live in a day and age of animal testing, where do you think these people get their animals?  We also live in a time of "dog fighting" as an illegal sport.  How do you think they get "bait" dogs.   Wouldn't you hate to find out that you animal has been a victim of illegal fights or experiments.

If you love your animal and want what is best for it, then there are a few things you can do prior to turning over a dog. The number one thing to do is for the person turning over the dog to ask for a vet reference. A vet's office that the person who will be taking custody of the dog will use for their veterinarian purposes for that dog.  Most of the time, a person who is a dog or animal person, will have a prior vet, even if it has been a while, they will have been established somewhere.    All it takes is one telephone call to that vet's office and your answers will leave you feeling better about handing your dog over.
